Research

The major goal of our team is to understand the mechanisms of endogenous brain repair processes occurring as a consequence of the cell loss in neurodegenerative diseases, with a particular focus on Parkinson Syndromes.

Our work focuses on the following aspects

For this purpose we use the following models

  • The living human and rodent brain
  • The human postmortem brain
  • Toxin-induced mouse and rat models (MPTP, 6-OHDA, Rotenone, Annonacin)
  • Transgenic mouse models (tau, alpha-synuclein, parkin)
  • Neuronal cultures (primary, PC12, SHSY5Y, MESC2.10).

The projection of dopaminergic neurons in the Substantia Nigra (red) to the Striatum (blue) is affected in Parkinson Syndromes.
